by Marianne L
(Golden, CO)

If an employee moves from one state to another, but is still employed by the same company, are they required to fill out a new W-4 right away, or can they wait until Jan 1?

The company is located in Colorado. The employee transferring from CO to Georgia October 1st and wants to wait until Jan 1st to file a new W-4. Can they wait or must they fill out new W-4 with GA address right away?

New State W-4 Needed
by: Best Business Payroll

Moving to a new state, even though employed by the same company, requires an employee to fill out a new state W-4. Since they will now be considered a Georgia resident, Georgia state tax rates will apply, and those will need to be collected from the first paycheck earned while living in that state.
